Dhikr for busy Muslim women: How to fit rememberance into your day.

Dhikr for busy Muslim women is about finding calm and connection amid life’s demands. Even with work, family, and endless to-do's, remembering Allah ﷻ brings peace, focus, and balance to the heart.

Busy Muslim women can fit dhikr into their day by pairing short adhkar with everyday routines, like commutes, chores, or quiet moments, keeping remembrance light, sincere, and consistent.

How can busy Muslim women stay consistent with dhikr every day?

Dhikr for busy Muslim women is more than a routine, it’s a refuge for the heart. Between work, family, studies, and community, our days in the West fill up fast, leaving little room to pause or breathe. Yet deep within, our souls continue to long for the remembrance of Allah ﷻ.

Long moments of worship may feel out of reach, but dhikr (ذِكْر) offers peace, focus, and renewal a moment of stillness that lightens the heart without adding weight to our to-do lists.

We can remember Allah while pushing the buggy, waiting for the train , sitting in traffic, or between emails. Short adhkar anchor our hearts, slow our breath, and reset our moods. The best dhikr for busy Muslim women is not long or complicated, it is simple, consistent, and woven into our daily life.

Doing dhikr while handling everyday things brings me a kind of peace that’s hard to describe. Whether I’m folding laundry, cooking dinner, or sitting in traffic, it’s my quiet reminder that Allah is near and that my worldly moments can still hold barakah.

What Dhikr Means And Why It Fits Your Hectic Days

Your life moves fast, but your heart still needs contentment. Dhikr gives you that contentment in seconds. It is simple remembrance of Allah through words of praise, gratitude, and surrender, light on the tongue , heavy on the scales.

There was a time when nothing else worked. Scrolling Instagram, watching TV, even talking to people, nothing filled that gap inside. But every time I turned to remembering Allah, something shifted. The calm would return. The tightness in my chest would loosen. It didn’t matter where I was, in the kitchen, on a walk, or just catching my breath. That moment of dhikr grounded me.

Allah ﷻ commands:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ ذِكْرًا كَثِيرًا “O you who believe, remember Allah with much remembrance.” Yā ayyuhā alladhīna āmanū, udhkurū Allāha dhikran kathīrā, (Qur’an 33:41), Allah calls us to remember Him often.

And He reminds us:

أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ“Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” ,Alā bidhikrillāhi taṭma’innu al-qulūb, (Qur’an 13:28). When your mind feels full, these adhkar ground you and bring you peace.

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

لَا يَزَالُ لِسَانُكَ رَطْبًا مِنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ “Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah.”, Lā yazālu lisānuka raṭban min dhikrillāh, (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3375, Hasan). This is what will give you success in this world and the hereafter.

We don’t need silence or long hours (Would be nice though) ; we only need sincerity and a few adhkar on our tongues. The beauty of dhikr, for me, is how it turns ordinary moments into worship. It’s like a two for one gift, you get the calm of remembering Allah and the joy of knowing that even while busy, your heart is awake and remembering Allah.

As Shaykh Yasir Qadhi beautifully explains in The blessings of Dhikr, remembrance is not only a spiritual act but also a healing practice that can anchor us through life’s noise and pressure.

The Simple Essence of Dhikr in Islam

Dhikr means you repeat words that honour Allah and remember Allah. You keep them light on your tongue, and steady in your heart.

Over time, I started recognising what my heart needed, and which words of remembrance helped.

When I’m overwhelmed or exhausted, I quietly say- لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ اللّٰهِ – Lā ilāha illallāh, Muhammadur Rasūlullāh. There is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

When I’m feeling low or disconnected, it’s often-أَسْتَغْفِرُ ٱللّٰهَ- Astaghfirullāh. I seek forgiveness from Allah

On the days I feel energised, full of hope, or just hungry for reward, I say,

Glory be to Allah, all praise is due to Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest

And throughout the day , in traffic, while cooking, or even just sitting with my children , I send ṣalawat on the Prophet. It brings me so much peace.

Some of the my favourite adhkar are :

  • سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ -Subhan Allah, Glory be to Allah.
  • الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ -Alhamdulillah, All praise is for Allah.
  • اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ -Allahu Akbar, Allah is the Greatest
  • لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ -La ilaha illa Allah, There is no god but Allah.
  • أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ -Astaghfirullah, I seek Allah’s forgiveness.
  • صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ – Sallallahu ala Muhammad, Peace and blessings upon Muhammad.

Say them with intention. Breathe with them. Feel them in your heart.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us dhikr as a daily habit for everyone. He said to keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah, to say سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ subhanallah, الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ alhamdulillah , and اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ allahu akbar, after prayer in specific counts (Sahih Muslim 2727).

He also taught his daughter Fāṭimah (رضي الله عنها radiallahu anha ) a special evening dhikr, now known as Tasbīḥ Fāṭimah that fits perfectly into family life at home.

Keep it simple:

  • Say سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ Subhan Allah -when you see beauty or feel relief.
  • Say الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ Alhamdulillah -after a task, a sip of water, or a safe drive.
  • Say أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ Astaghfirullah -after a slip, a harsh word, or a tense moment.
  • Say لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ La ilaha illallah -to center your faith throughout the day.

If you’d like to understand the spiritual depth behind these phrases, Dr. Omar Suleiman’s guide on dhikr from the Yaqeen Institute is a wonderful resource that explores the heart of remembrance.

Allah ﷻ promises: فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ “So remember Me, and I will remember you.”,Fa’udhkurūnī adhkurkum, (Qur’an 2:152). Remember Allah is always there for you.

No matter how busy the day, each dhikr increases our iman one letter at a time.

How Dhikr Eases the Pressures of Modern Life

Modern life pulls our attention in a hundred directions. Emails, deadlines, errands, notifications. Dhikr gathers us back to center. It is a pause that doesn’t stop the day but reframes it.

Allah ﷻ says: الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمْ “Those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides.” ,Alladhīna yadhkurūna Allāha qiyāman wa quʿūdan wa ʿalā junūbihim, (Qur’an 3:191). Dhikr is not confined to prayer mats , we can do dhikr anywhere, whenever we like, we can do it whilst we are on our school runs, commutes, chores, and late night tidying. It turns our chores into worship. Subhanallah for Allah's blessings.

From a wellbeing perspective, repetition also slows breathing, eases tension, and quiets anxious thoughts. Spiritually, it transforms wasted minutes into worship.

Dhikr becomes our reset button: simple words, deep calm, constant connection.

  • Whisper -سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ Subhan Allah, during a brisk walk. Your steps find a rhythm.
  • Say -الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ Alhamdulillah, after sending a tough email. Your chest loosens.
  • Repeat أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ Astaghfirullah, after a tense call. Your tone softens.

“One word of dhikr can lift your heart, calm your mind, and bring reward that only Allah knows. That’s what keeps me coming back, one phrase at a time.”

Easy Dhikr Practices Tailored for Busy Muslim women

Here are simple, steady dhikr that fits a packed schedule. This section gives you quick routines you can start today. Keep it light, repeatable, and grounded in sunnah.

Simple Morning Dhikr to Start Your Day with Strength

Anchor your morning in less than five minutes:

  • Say بِسْمِ اللَّهِ Bismillah In the Name of Allah, as you wake.
  • Recite آيَةُ الْكُرْسِيِّ Ayat al-Kursi . It is a known protection, and it sets a firm tone for your day. Do this whilst brushing your hair.
  • Say سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ Subhan Allah Glory be to Allah, الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ Alhamdulillah All praise is for Allah , and اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ Allahu Akbar Allah is the Greatest, , 33 times each, as the kettle boils.
  • Finish with لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ La ilaha illa Allah, There is no god but Allah, once with full attention, when putting your shoes on.

Dhikr tips:

  • Place a sticky note near your mirror with آيَةُ الْكُرْسِيِّ (Ayat al-Kursi).
  • Pair dhikr with a habit you never skip, like coffee prep or the school run.
  • Keep the phrases soft on your tongue.

I often treat dhikr like a small personal challenge. Some days I set goals a hundred “SubḥānAllāh” before noon and when I reach them, I feel this quiet sense of achievement, like my heart just smiled. It’s such a simple way to feel close to Allah, even in the middle of chaos.

“Whoever recites Āyat al-Kursī after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents them from entering Paradise except death.”(Sunan an-Nasa’i 992, Sahih)

Dhikr on the Go During Work or Commutes

You have more “in-between” time than you think. Short dhikr work best while driving, walking to the Tube, or waiting for your coffee.

Aim for small, steady bursts. One minute often, not ten minutes once. This consistency shapes your heart over time.

Transform waiting and commuting into worship:

  • لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ , La ilaha illa Allah,There is no god but Allah – at red lights.
  • سُبْحَانَ اللَّه,Subhan Allah, Glory be to Allah- when starting work.
  • الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ, Alhamdulillah ,All praise is for Allah – after drinking water.
  • اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ, Allahu akbar, Allah is the greatest- in the lift.
  • أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ ,Astaghfirullah, I seek Allah’s forgiveness- while waiting for the train.
  • صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ ,Sallallahu ala Muhammad, Peace and blessings upon Muhammad- during a short walk.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

أَفْضَلُ مَا قُلْتُ أَنَا وَالنَّبِيُّونَ مِنْ قَبْلِي: لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
“The best words I and the prophets before me have said are: Lā ilāha illā Allāh.”, Afdalu mā qultu anā wa an-nabiyyūna min qablī: Lā ilāha illa Allāh, (Al-Muwatta’ 1789; Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3585)

Evening Wind Down Dhikr for Restful Nights

Evenings need a gentle reset. You have carried roles and tasks all day. Let your night dhikr release the load, invite protection, and settle your breath for sleep.

Build a simple bedtime set:

  • Gratitude scan: Name three blessings from your day and say الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ (All praise is for Allah, Alhamdulillah), alhamdulilllah for each. Keep it specific, like a warm meal, a kind message, a safe drive.
  • Protection surahs: Recite سُورَةُ الْإِخْلَاصِ (Sincerity, Al-Ikhlāṣ), سُورَةُ الْفَلَقِ (Daybreak, Al-Falaq), and سُورَةُ النَّاسِ (Mankind, An-Nas), each three times. The Prophet taught the three chapters for protection at night. Cup your hands, and recite the three chapters. Wipe your hands over your head and body.
  • Closing forgiveness: Repeat أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ (I seek Allah’s forgiveness, Astaghfirullah) 10 to 33 times, slow and soft.
  • Tasbih Fāṭimah, taught for the home: 33 سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ (Subhan Allah), 33 الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ (Alhamdulillah), and 34 اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ (Allahu Akbar). This set eases the body and calms the mind.
  • The last two verses of سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ (The Cow, Al-Baqarah, 2:285-286) are also known for protection and sufficiency if you know them. Recite them on nights when you have a bit more energy.

Why it helps you unwind:

  • Gratitude flips the script: Your mind stops replaying stress and ends on gifts.
  • Protection settles fear: You sleep with trust, not worry.
  • Rhythm soothes the body: The counts of Tasbih Fāṭimah relaxes your breath.

End your day light. You hand over your worries, you ask for care, and you fall asleep in remembrance.

Common Struggles with Consistent Dhikr

Every woman has moments when dhikr feels harder to sustain. Recognising these challenges helps you grow through them with gentleness and tawakkul.

  • Distraction or forgetfulness – the mind races with tasks, and dhikr slips away.
  • Feeling unworthy or too tired – believing your remembrance “isn’t enough.”
  • Overcomplicating routines – setting goals that feel like chores, not worship.
  • Thinking dhikr needs long quiet time – when in truth, Allah listens in every moment.

Is Dhikr for Spiritual People?

People sometimes say they’re not “spiritual enough” for dhikr. But I ask, what does “spiritual” even mean?

You don’t need a quiet room, incense, or the perfect mood. You don’t even need extra time.

Dhikr is for every Muslim. Doing it while doing life brings barakah into your time, and that barakah gives you more time to remember Allah.

🌿 Tip: Even one sincere “SubhanAllah” said with presence outweighs hours of distracted repetition. Allah values consistency and sincerity over perfection.

Your Personal Action Plan to Make Dhikr a Habit

You do not need more time, you need a clear plan. Build a simple routine which weaves into the moments you already have. This action plan turns the best dhikr for busy Muslim women into small steps you can repeat every day without stress.

Create a personalised dhikr list

Start with a short list you can keep on your tongue.

  • Calm and focus: لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ, La ilaha illa Allah -There is no god but Allah.
  • Gratitude: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ, Alhamdulillah -All praise is for Allah.
  • Praise: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ, Subhan Allah – Glory be to Allah.
  • Strength: اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ, Allahu Akbar- Allah is the Greatest.
  • Forgiveness: أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ, Astaghfirullah -I seek Allah’s forgiveness.
  • Blessings on the Prophet: صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ, Sallallahu ala Muhammad- Peace and blessings upon Muhammad.

Assign Dhikr to Actions You Already Do

This removes decision fatigue and builds rhythm.

  • Wake up : لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ, La ilaha illa Allah, There is no god but Allah- three slow times.
  • Kettle on: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ , Subhan Allah, Glory be to Allah
  • Lock the front door: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ, Alhamdulillah, All praise is for Allah- once, with a deep breath.
  • Before opening email: أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ, Astaghfirullah, I seek Allah’s forgiveness- five times.
  • Lift ride or stairs: اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ , Allahu Akbar, Allah is the Greatest – three to five times.
  • School pick up صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ, Sallallahu ala Muhammad, Peace and blessings upon Muhammad- for one minute.
A smiling Muslim woman in blue hijab works on her laptop at a sunlit desk with lush plants, balancing productivity and dhikr for busy lives.

Track, Review, and Adjust Each Week

A light tracker keeps you honest and motivated. No spreadsheets needed.

  • Tick off actions on a simple weekly grid.
  • Aim for consistency, not quantity.
  • Review on Sunday night. Keep what worked, change what did not.
  • Add one new dhikr only when the current ones feel natural.

When to Increase or Rotate Phrases

As your habit settles, grow with intention.

  • Increase counts in small steps, like 5 to 10.
  • Rotate focus by season. Forgiveness in Sha’ban, gratitude in Ramadan prep, praise during autumn walks.
  • Keep one dhikr stable as your foundation all year.

Over time, this plan turns the best dhikr for busy Muslim women into a steady heartbeat across your day. You give your tongue a path, your mind a rest, and your heart a home.

If you miss a day, you are human. Start the next dhikr as if nothing happened.

Dhikr has become something I look forward to. The more I remembered Allah, the more peace I felt and that peace made me want to remember Him even more. My hope is that you’ll feel that same joy, that same closeness, in every breath of dhikr you do.

Gentle Tools That Help Without Distraction

  • Tasbih ring or bracelet: A tactile reminder, discreet in public.
  • Lock-screen note: Your core dhikrs, always visible.
  • Calendar nudge: A one-line reminder at school pick-up or lunch.

Keep tools quiet and non intrusive. Your focus is remembrance, not tracking.
